The 1985 season and is best remembered for delivering Ayrton Senna his first ever Grand Prix victory during a torrential downpour at the Portuguese Grand Prix in Estoril. This black and gold John Player Special liveried machine was powered by a 1.5 liter turbocharged Renault V6 engine that produced over 800 horsepower and featured innovative aerodynamic elements like mini winglets on the sidepods to improve stability and downforce. During the historic 1985 Portuguese Grand Prix Senna started from his maiden pole position and demonstrated unparalleled mastery in the wet conditions by leading every single lap and finishing more than a minute ahead of second place Michele Alboreto while lapping nearly the entire field. The car was widely considered to have the best handling chassis of the season due to its exceptional braking and turning capabilities which allowed Senna to maintain a dominant pace even as other top drivers spun out of the race. This victory at Estoril remains one of the most iconic performances in motorsport history and marked the true arrival of Ayrton Senna as a global sporting icon and the undisputed master of wet weather driving.
